Lately I have had quite the influx of extended family portrait sessions! Usually, families are uniting together from living in different parts of the United States and WORLD. Often, the members are only visiting for a limited time, so they want to capture formal photographs of everyone together. I think this is a wonderful idea, as my mother has portraits of my extended family back when her parent celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Those photos are really cherished memories.
Extended family sessions work similar to a family session, but on a larger scale. I usually start with whole group photos to capture everyone right away. Then I create group portraits with the grandparents with grandchildren, then grandparents with their grown children, followed by each family unit, all the way to cousins, and siblings. All of these combinations are so important to capture. Sometimes, it is the first time young cousins have met each other especially if they are toddlers or infants!
