What to Wear for Fall Family Portraits

Jennifer Carley Photography is a Dallas based child and family photographer. She enjoys capturing not only families but also maternity, newborns, and high school seniors.

Getting Started:

When scheduling sessions many clients ask for advice on planning their outfits. I am always happy to make suggestions and give feedback. I suggest starting by choosing an outfit for one person, then building from there. Incorporate various coordinating colors for each person. Some people start with a neutral like gray or tan and add a pop of color. Others like to choose a main color, then incorporate complimentary neutrals. One thing to keep consistent is the color tone, stay in the warm tones or in cool tones.

Step by Step:

Decide if you want to dress formal, semi-casual, or casual. Consider the location in making this decision. Crisp clean urban settings, compliment dressy attire, while a rugged natural setting is nice for casual clothing.

Start with an inspiration outfit. Choose other pieces based on that outfit.

Use a variety of colors that coordinate by incorporating small detail colors in an outfit.

Keep the patterns simple. Allow only one person to have a busy design.

Add layers and accessories. These give texture and interest in the photo.

Choose appropriate shoes. This is not the time for sneakers or flip flops.

Check nails, teeth, and hair for grooming.

Lastly, make sure clothing fits well and is not constricting or uncomfortable.

Things to avoid:

Some wardrobe choices can become a big distraction in photographs. It is smart to avoid clothes with words, pictures, and logo. Bright neon colors do not photograph well and discolor skin tone. Remember to remove keys, phones, and hair ties before starting photos. Check nail polish and makeup application. These are small details that make a difference in the final product.

It was such a joy to photograph this family as they welcomed their fifth child! The older siblings were so enthralled with their new sister. The proud parents were so content with their little one. The weather during this session was rainy and overcast, but that did not interfere with our session. Natural window light was perfect.

This family exemplifies a story of strength, hope, and perseverance. The mother’s tattoo art tells their story. It is one of inspiration and sacrifice. Each person in this beautiful family represents a beacon of hope and new beginnings.

I also had the pleasure of photographing the parents for a maternity session! They were troopers in the Texas heat, but the beautiful scenery made up for the sweltering weather! We were prepared with lots of water and ice towels!

Keller High School Senior Photography

Keller High School Senior Photography Varsity Bass Team

What makes a great senior photography session?

Of course the purpose is to capture nice photos of the graduate. The icing on the cake is when the senior and their family decide to incorporate a hobby, interest, or talent into the session! These photo sessions really portray the graduating senior’s personality! Images involving interests, add dimension to the photos, allowing the viewer to experience and envision the teen’s talents.

This session took place at Lake Grapevine. I met the family as they launched their bass fishing boating into the water. We used several great locations to capture action “fishing” shots.  Then we ventured onto land for more classic style portraits.

It is my job as the photographer to capture the teen’s interests. This is achieved by having conversations with both the teen and the parents in the planning phase, as well as during the session. It is a partnership. The client relies on my photo knowledge, while I rely on the clients’ expertise in the specific area being photographed.

Photographing a member of a fishing team was a first for me! I always welcome new ideas and ventures. I wonder what will be next!

Denton Photographer Extended Family Photos

Denton Photographer Extended Family Photos

Denton Photographer Extended Family Photos – This family contacted me with the interest of family photos taken of all the immediate members. In a short time, some of the older boys are going off to college, jobs, or training for the military. It is always a pleasure to capture families frozen in time, before the grown children head of to their new endeavors. All the generations together is such a sight to see! The grandparents look at their grandchildren with pride, and joke with their grown children about the triumphs and trials of parenting! Torches are being passed as each generation enters an uncharted phase of life.

I enjoy using this location in Flower Mound, because it provides plenty of room for children to explore with a wildflower butterfly garden, fields, and a walking path. The scenery is great too with beautiful sunrise and sunset spots to use. The silo offers character as well. In my opinion, one can’t go wrong at this location!

Grapevine Family Photographer Fall Portraits This family and I had a wonderful time photographing their fall portraits! The Grapevine Botanic Gardens were the perfect size for this family with small children. We were able to walk through the paths to several locations to achieve a versatile look in the images. The rich greenery and sun setting, provided a lush setting for vibrant colors.

Achieving the Classic Look

During a family session, I always capture the family posed. Those are the photos we all want framed and given as gifts to family. I also spend time capture the family in their natural interactions. With gentle prompting, the family interacts with one another. In these moments I capture authentic moments with genuine emotions. Also, it encourages movement, which adds depth to images. With the combination of guided posed images and candid moments, I achieve a classic family portrait gallery. I strive to give clients direction, including what to do and how to dress so I can create a timeless collection that they will love for years!

Mary’s Lake | Knoll-Willows Open Space

During the summer, I went on several trips! They were all really fantastic, in their own way. My family and I packed up a van and drove to Colorado from Dallas. Our first stop was Colorado Springs, where we spent the night and explored Garden of the Gods. Later that afternoon we drove to Estes Park, one of the most magical places in Colorado (in my opinion). Of course we spent most of our free time hiking in the Rocky Mountain National Park. One evening we managed to get cleaned up, so I ventured out to photograph my daughters. My older daughter was more interested in being photographed than the younger. Oh, I wish Dallas had the same scenery as Estes Park. I am totally in love with all of these images. This trip, made me envision a reality of offering destination photography! I think it would be so fun to travel and photograph lovely people!

Our two settings include Mary’s Lake and Knoll-Willows Open Space. They were the perfect locations for beautiful mountain views.

You have brains in your head.

You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself any direction you choose.

-Dr. Seuss

Flower Mound Child Photographer Back to School! School has started in most places around Dallas. I think another round will occur after Labor Day weekend. Starting school can be an exciting and adventurous time. Children are growing and learning new things. They are becoming more independent in their physical needs and also in their thinking. It was so fun to photograph some children ready to start a new year in preschool as well as starting kindergarten! I found a couple motivational quotes about learning! I really like what they have to say.

I like a teacher who gives you something to take home to think about besides homework.

The Mandalay Canals in Las Colinas are such a unique setting. Nestled in downtown Las Colinas off the highway is a small section below street level. It is paved with unique stones and surrounded by Italian style architecture. Ivy walls, rot iron balconies, and ornate doors decorate the area. Planters are filled with beautiful greenery, too. Every section offers a photo opportunity. The location is perfect for children, portraits, seniors, families, engagements, and bridals.

Las Colinas Mandalay Canals

The canals are such a beautiful location tucked away in downtown Las Colinas, Irving. This hidden gem offers a magical photography experience. It is as if we have stepped out of Texas for a moment and into a foreign land. The Mandalay Canals were a perfect setting for Ariana to showcase her dance expertise. She is such a talented ballerina, with an abundance of ideas and movements for the camera. Of course we had to use the tutu, leotard, and pointe shoes for the classic ballet look. Then we transitioned to a Mr. Pretty tulle skirt with a train. It had layers upon layers of billowing fabric. It was an elegant touch to our dance themed photo session.

Las Colinas Canals are perfect for bridal and engagement portraits, high school senior photography, family photos, and even milestone occasions. The canals are centrally located in Irving, Texas near large highways. I can’t wait to return!

Flower Mound Family Portraits Dallas Studio Photography

I had a great time photographing this family in the Flower Mound studio. They had a nice time being themselves during the session. My goal with every client is to highlight natural bonds between family members. In a split second, I can capture the special laugh or smile that conveys emotion. At the end of a session, I want clients to feel like the session was fun, enjoyable, and even relaxing. During t the studio session, I play music as well as use various types of furniture to help clients feel at ease. Actually, the mother in this session finished the session surprised thinking {This was not bad at all. It was quite enjoyable!} When a client views their images, I want them to feel an emotion and see the photo come alive as they remember the session fondly.

Fall Family Photography Flower Mound Photographer

Fall Family Photography Flower Mound Photographer

Fall family photography Flower Mound photographer and surrounding DFW cities. I am so excited to start the Fall 2018 photography season!

Pretty soon the leaves will start changing colors, the weather will cool off, hopefully sooner than later! There are so many wonderful locations in the DFW metroplex for family photography. I have found several wonderful places throughout Ft. Worth, Southlake, Grapevine, Flower Mound, Lewisville, Coppell, Carrollton, Irving, Plano, Dallas, and Richardson!

This session was in the back of a popular park in Grapevine. We had one hour to explore the trail and even hike down to the creek bed. The trees were quite pretty. Even though it was a very windy day, the trees did a great job of shielding the wind! Some of my favorite photographs from the season were taken during this session.

Fall session options this year vary, depending on your style, time preference, and location desires. Please contact me to schedule your session.

This beautiful dress arrived and I wanted to find the perfect location to photograph it. Highland Park, Dallas was the perfect place. Nestled in a prestigious neighborhood, Prather Park, is comprised of stone paths and bridges through a forest of lovely trees and a small creek. We enjoyed exploring the “Secret” paths that took us to beautiful scenery. The location is lush green, and in the fall I bet the autumn colors will be beautiful!
