DFW Family Photographer | Back to school Petite Sessions

Its that time of year again when parents feel excitement to finally get into a regular routine and start school. Sibling arguments may end, and the never ending “I am bored” statement will be hushed with the busyness of school days. Other parents may feel an ache in their heart as they realize it is time to let their children take another step of independence. Either way, it is a stepping stone in childhood and parenthood!

It is time to set our children free, but also help them have stable roots to face decisions when parents are not present. It is a large task to give our children wings and also roots to stay grounded.

I pulled some seeds of knowledge from Roots and Wings: How to Give Your Kids The Best Gift Ever by Cally Worden. from A Fine Parent

Parents are like parachutes. They soften the fall, but the trick is knowing when to pull the chord!

“We have to remember that we are our children’s parachutes – there to let them break the fall and land softly. But in order to help our kids flourish we need also to be willing to allow a little free form skydiving before deploying the chute.”

Roots hold up a tree and provide nutrients for it to remain stable and grow strong. We give our children roots by helping them develop a healthy emotional and spiritual well being. This foundation can help them face different situations.

We want our children to fly and soar! We have to help them take the first leap. Encourage them. Acknowledge their feelings. Create a safe environment for them to feel comfortable sharing their feelings.

“Raising strong kids is partly about providing a strong base to which they can feel attached and safely grounded. When this is in place, our children will internalize it and use it as a springboard for healthy growth. In allowing our children this freedom to explore in the context of caring boundaries we provide the ideal platform for them to fly.”

As school approaches, I wish you all the courage to help your babies take another step in growing up!

Dallas Wildflower Photography – One afternoon I was at the park with my daughter and noticed a beautiful blanket of yellow in the distance. I coaxed her to take a little walk with me to discover what we saw! To my delight it was a beautiful field of wildflowers! It was late in summer, so I was really surprised to stumble on them. I think they are black eyed Susans or cone flowers. Maybe they are the same?? Usually, everything is burnt to a crisp and a bland shade of brown this time of year.

These two sweet peas are cousins. One mama told the other mama about the flowers. I am so glad they both had a chance to have adorable portraits! I brought my vintage quilt along. A good antique quilt is always great for just about every type of session, especially wildflowers! I am adding to my collection of quilts. One can NEVER have enough.

Before and After

This is a before and after image of a photo from the session. There is a noticeable difference in the warmth between the two photographs. Also, the shadows on the girls face are lifted. The overall color tones are richer and more vibrant. It is always a journey of where a photograph ends up after editing. Photographers are artists.

I had a wonderful time capturing the wedding of E and T. They were married at an adorable chapel in Denton. The greenery and woods surrounding it were perfect for natural light portraits.

We started with the “first look” between the bride and groom. It is a sweet time for them to calm their nerves before the hubbub of the wedding day. True emotions really prevail during this intimate time. I love seeing the bride and groom together during the first look.

Bridal party portraits before the wedding! What a fun crew.

What a special ceremony in a beautiful chapel. I captured these images from the balcony with my telephoto lens. I can take intimate portraits but still be far away to not distract from the beauty of the moment.

Wedding reception portraits are some of my favorites! The bride and groom have said their “I dos” and have eaten dinner. Their nerves are more relaxed!

The simple details of the wedding cake were perfect.

I love the brides choice in all the wedding details.

What a fun reception! The glow wands made it really fun to photograph. Also, the dj provided a live accompaniment during a song! That was a cool way to pump up the energy.

The private last dance is a special moment between the bride and groom. They can enjoy time to themselves after constant adrenaline rushes from earlier in the day.

Wedding exits are so fun! The energy is contagious! This couple used streamers that pop out of tubes for their wedding exit. This makes it easier to clean up! They are quite fun, because everyone gets a little tangled in them, including the bride and groom!

Other exits I have seen include sparklers, paper airplanes, and LED wands! So fun!

I loved photographing this family! They had me photograph them for maternity portraits, and now I actually had the opportunity to meet their sweet little boy! He was about one month old when I photographed him. He was so precious. I just wanted to hold him all day long!!

During this session I utilized wonderful window light. It created a cozy yet dramatic look to the portraits. I love natural light, because it enhances depth and emotions. Mom and dad can just rock baby by the light of the window.

For every session I bring along props such as swaddle blankets, onesies, and a baby Moses basket. I adore the basket! All babies look just adorable swaddled in the basket. It is one of my favorite poses. I can of course use special items the parents desire such as special clothing, heirlooms, and blankets. It is always special to see what parents include. It definitely adds a personal touch to each newborn session.

Here are a couple of images from their maternity session. Aren’t they sweet! We used a park in Highland Park, Dallas. It was so green even though it was late February!

Did you know I can also use my studio for newborn family portraits? Sometimes it is easier for the parents to bring the baby to the studio. I can use natural light as well as studio light, depending on the parents’ preferences.
