Spring Family Portraits in Old Town Lewisville

Spring Family Portraits
Old Town Lewisville is one of my favorite locations for family spring portraits! It is centrally located off of I-35E North. Right off of Main Street, Wayne Ferguson Plaza features a tree-lined board walk as well as a large open green space. The boardwalk is lined with Redbud trees and the planters are full of blooming wildflowers. It’s a peaceful location in a busy area! The quaint area is perfect for families with small children. We can use the space to capture a variety of portraits with different backgrounds. The large green space provides a place for children to burn a little energy as well!

Planning Portraits for Your Family

Portraits with young children can sometimes feel daunting! Have no fear or hesitation about it! Here are a few tips on preparing young children for family portraits. First thing is first, a hungry child is not a happy one! Feed your child a snack before the pictures. Making sure it is a healthy filling snack not too high in sugar is helpful. After the snack, check your child’s teeth and nose for any food left behind. Bring along a bag of snack for you child to have in the car after pictures. Do you see a theme? Food! It’s helpful with little ones! Dress your child in their pictures clothes right before getting in the car. If you have a very young child, arrive at the portrait location early, and dress your child at the portrait location. Bring a bag filled with a brush and baby wipes. These are helpful to have on hand when you arrive at your photo site.

When I photograph small children I kneel down on their level. I will ask them to play games, and help encourage a pose. Sometimes, small children will do better with more candid portraits rather than posed. I base that on the individual personality of the child. I allow young children time to take a break as needed. Most importantly, I strive to help the child feel special and comfortable, earning their trust. This allows me to capture their true personality.

Last, it is a great idea to reward a child for positive behavior. I do not recommend negative discipline during the portrait session. Most times this backfires. It creates an even more tense environment. Speaking to your child in a cheerful positive manner, not only encourages them, but also helps foster cheerful images. Many times, at the conclusion of a portrait session, the parents comment that it was fun! Dads even say it was enjoyable!
