Cool Weather Family Portraits | Flower Mound

Cool weather family portraits on a crisp fall morning.

Leading up to a portrait session, clients frequently check the weather. We had to reschedule our session due to a rainy day. Our new date, brought cooler weather. I was so impressed with how this family created a wonderful wintery wardrobe for their outdoor portraits. I thought this entry would be a great opportunity to provide helpful tips for dressing your family for winter weather portraits.

Styling tips for dressing your family for cold weather portraits.

  • Hidden pieces. Start with underclothing that will not be seen, but will do the job of providing warmth.
  • Outerwear. Layer with a cable knit sweater, cashmere cardigan, classic wool coat, leather jacket, sports coat, or a blazer. If it warms up, the outer piece can be removed.
  • Tights. Ladies and girls can add a sophisticated fashion touch by wearing opaque tights.
  • Foot wear. Riding boots, cowboy boots, and oxford boots will keep toes warm, and look great!
  • Accessories. Add interest to your wardrobe with a luxurious scarf. Include a vest or bow tie for the fellows. Various types of hats will do well- cowboy, paperboy, fedora, or a wide brimmed boho hat. Babies always look adorable in a knitted beanie.
  • Incorporate warm fabrics. wool, fur, cashmere, corduroy, velvet, fleece.
  • Well fitted clothing. Make sure the clothing fits properly. Any piece that is too small, too tight, too long, too baggy, etc. could cause some discomfort or awkwardness. Especially check that the shoes fit your child (if you just bought new ones). Kids grow so fast, sometimes we don’t realize their growth until you try on a shoe or pair of pants that suddenly don’t fit.
  • Inspiration. Browse or shop using Like to Know LTK.
  • Bundle up. Lastly, bring a large blanket to bundle up the kiddies at the conclusion or in between poses. The big blanket will be welcomed by all, and it may offer a fun concluding photo opportunity!
