After running my photography business in the DFW Metroplex for almost a decade, I have the pleasure of photographing many families through the years. I see their children grow up! It’s really quite an honor that I don’t take lightly! There are so many photographer options in the Dallas area. It’s true joy to see families year after year! That brings me to this lovely family that I first met about five years ago! We had previously used nature as their photo backdrop- on Lake Grapevine and at Stone Creek Park. This year, mom wanted to go with sophisticated elegance! Mandalay Canal in Las Colinas, Irving is the perfect location for dressing formal. The family’s wardrobe was stunning- mom was so beautiful in the navy gown and her husband and son were so sharp in their suits!
What Should you Know about Mandalay Canal?
This is a lovely photography location nestled in the heart of Las Colinas right off of 114 making it convenient to access from many areas in the Dallas Fort Worth area. The canals are located off of Mandalay Drive where parallel street parking is available as well as affordable parking garages in close proximity. A short distance from the car park, you will find stairs leading down to the canal area which offers a Mediterranean atmosphere reminiscent of Europe. In fact, it is common to see gondoliers serenading couples as they travel along the canal!
When is a good time to use Mandalay Canal for photos?
The canals are such a great option for portraits because they are beautiful through every season of the year! Timing of portraits is a little different at this location. Since it is located below street level we do not use the typical golden hour timing. We can use the location late morning and early afternoon a few hours after sunrise and before sunset. During homecoming and prom seasons, the area can draw large crowds during the afternoon and evening. It’s best to work around these events.
